Binnie couldn’t sleep. It was well documented that Cornell liked the company of young women—, actresses, college students—and rarely admitted men into his basement studio to see works in progress. He was reluctant to sell his work to dealers but gladly gave collages and dream boxes as gifts to the women he . Relationships, however, never manifested. His painful shyness and obsession with “innocence” prevented that. He’d had his first sexual encounter in his sixties, with an extravagantly exhibitionist performance artist, Yayoi Kusama—this only after he’d gone around asking other artists if they knew any women who’d pose nude. He didn’t draw, but he wanted to learn, he said.

Still, that encounter was not a romance. It was a performance, perhaps with Cornell as the audience. Binnie wondered if Kusama snickered at him, amused in the same way Andy Warhol and his tribe were amused by Cornell. (Did Gary find her amusing?) They competed among themselves to see whom Cornell would admit into his house and for how long, and how much they’d manage to see. They would pretend to need the bathroom to sneak a peek at the upstairs, at his monk’s cell of a bedroom.
